Livingstone

Visit Zambia's adventure capital...

The border town of Livingstone is famous for one thing - the "Smoke that Thunders" - or Mosi oa Tunya in the local language of the Lozi people. This is the Victoria Falls - the world's largest body of falling water, created as the mighty Zambezi River plunges more than 100m straight down into the Batoka Gorge, creating one of the most spectacular sights on the planet and a genuine wonder of the natural world.

Zambia shares the falls with neighbouring Zimbabwe, where it is generally regarded that the best year-round views of the falls can be had, but Livingstone has something its neighbour doesn't - access above the falls to one of its biggest, and most exciting drawcard - the Devil's Pool - a natural rock pool on the edge of the main cataract where the current abates enough in the dry season for people to swim without fear and peer, precariously, over the edge of the falls themselves.

This breathtaking attraction is just one of the many reasons that together make Livingstone a global destination, attracting adventure seekers from across the world who come for the white water rafting, micro lighting, zip lining and terrifying gorge swing that reaches terminal velocity before swinging you to the safety of terra firma.

More gentle pursuits include helicopter flips over the falls, hiking, game drives in the Mosi oa Tunya National Park, sunset cruises on the Zambezi, river safaris and cultural visits to the local communities around the town, as well as visits to the various museums and places of interest in this historic town.

Named for legendary African explorer Dr David Livingstone, the town was founded in 1904, and is the site where a ground-breaking railway bridged the falls connecting what was then Northern and Southern Rhodesia, today's Zambia and Zimbabwe. Today, the rail bridge is a historic reminder of the region's colonial past and an adventure centre in its own right, as it's the home of the Victoria Falls bungee!

With a wonderful array of luxury hotels and lodges in and around Livingstone, there's no shortage of world-class accommodation, food and nightlife to match the vibrant adventurous pulse that sets this town apart. No trip to Zambia is complete without a stay in Livingstone!
