Africa speaks to something in all of us, helping us to understand what it is to be human and part of something greater than ourselves. This was where humanity began, some 2-million years ago, when our hominid ancestors took their first, faltering steps. It's where we get a glimpse of where we came from, and where we truly belong.

Today's Africa is a land of contrasts that offers a diverse range of travel experiences, from bustling urban jungles to vast wilderness areas and everything in between. Her history is ancient, and her landscapes legendary. So come with us and explore Africa on a Best African Safari - and fall in love with this fabulous continent in the process!

Where to Go?

Best African Safaris offers safari tours and packages to some of the most sought-after destinations in Africa. We help you to explore incredible safari destinations in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique - learning all about their vibrant cultures, wild places and the people and animals that call them home.

In our African safari tours we include visits to iconic landmarks such as The Victoria Falls, which acts as a natural border between Zambia and neighbouring Zimbabwe. This is where the mighty Zambezi River plunges almost 110m into the Batoka Gorge, with a curtain of water spanning 1,688m that in the rainy season channels 1,088m3 of water per second over its edge!

Called "the Smoke that Thunders" or "Mosi oa Tunya in the local vernacular, the falls were named by legendary explorer Dr David Livingstone for his queen, Victoria.

We take you to important places where history has been made and where the past meets the present in a fascinating exploration of the events that have shaped the countries we specialise in. We introduce you to people who have lived through recent history, as well as those who still follow traditional ways and cultures that have been handed down over countless millennia...

From the ancient San people in Botswana and Arab slave trade-era fortresses in Mozambique to the home of Nelson Mandela in South Africa's Soweto, we will share Africa's stories with you.

When to Go?

There is no "best" time to visit Africa, and when to go depends very much on where you go... For example, for game viewing, the dry season is generally regarded as the best time to visit any game reserve or wilderness area because the bush is less dense and animals tend to gravitate towards water sources like rivers, dams and waterholes.

In Southern Africa, the dry season coincides with winter, which lasts from June to September each year. September heralds the start of spring (September to November), but the dry season lasts until the first good rains fall, and while rains usually come in November, they can in fact happen anytime from October onwards!

Here in the southern hemisphere our summer begins in December and lasts until March. Summer is hot. And wet. Humidity levels are much higher and you can expect seasonal thunderstorms and rain during this time. The humidity levels increase the closer to sea-level you get. And at the coast they are at their highest.

This is the season for baby animals of all descriptions, from impala lambs to zebra foals. It's also the time of year when birding is at its best as all the African, European and Asian migrant species are in residence.

Autumn (March to May) is a wonderful time to visit, as the temperatures and humidity start to fall and the bush begins to thin out again. Grasses are in seed and the seed-eating birds are everywhere, as are the birds of prey.

Travel Advice

Here is some helpful advice for those considering an African safari adventure!

1. First of all, it's essential to check whether you need a visa for your destination/s and if you do, to apply for it in good enough time for your required travel dates.

2. You'll need a valid passport, of course, with at least another six months validity on it, and with a minimum of two clear facing pages for entry and exit stamps.

3. If you are travelling with children you need to be aware of the current regulations regarding entry and exit to African countries. Please contact the relevant consulate or embassy of the countries you are visiting to get the latest, up to date information. We are also on hand to assist you in this regard.

4. Some countries require vaccination certificates for holiday purposes, so it's a good idea to check with your local travel clinic on what they recommend and also to check whether any of the areas you are travelling to require anti-malaria medication.

5. We recommend insurance cover for the length of your vacation, covering your luggage and personal effects, as well as medical emergencies and treatment. If you pay for your trip on a credit card, this may be included at no extra cost, so check out the coverage provided and bring a copy of the policy with you. Ask your credit card company more about this. ·

6. If you are taking chronic medication, we encourage you to bring a copy of your prescription with you so that in the event of you losing anything these can easily be replaced.

7. Remember to make sure that your credit cards or bank cards are cleared for use while you are travelling. The countries we operate in have good high-street banks and automatic teller machines (ATMs) are widely available.

8. Buy some local currency before you leave. It's always a good idea to have some ready cash available when you arrive in a new country.

9. Make sure your cellphones are equipped with international roaming if you need to stay in touch with folks at home. Wifi coverage in Africa is not as widespread or easily accessible as in Europe and the US, so it may be a good idea to buy data locally when you arrive from one of our major service providers.

10. Please note that in the bush, connectivity is sometimes an issue as cell signals can be hard to obtain, but most lodges and camps have internet access and communications services for use in the event of emergencies. Be prepared for a digital detox!
