Day 2: In Swakopmund

Today is a special day as we take you on a special Swakopmund Desert Adventure.

We depart after breakfast for the open desert, travelling along the small-holdings on the northern bank of the Swakop River into the oldest desert of the world, the Namib Desert. Your tour-guide will explain the origin of the Namib Desert and explain the geological and climatic conditions.

As we proceed further we leave every trace of civilisation behind and find ourselves surrounded by the rugged and rocky scenery of the Namib Desert. Experience the “Ringing Stones” and the fascinating plants of the Namib, for example the indigenous Lithops, also known as the “Living Stones”, as well as a variety of rare lichens, and most of all, the remarkable Welwitschia plant, a living fossil which is only found in this geographical area. With a bit of luck, one can see springbok, klipspringer, steenbok, baboon, ostriches, Ruppel's korhaan and the trac-trac chat.

After a lunch break we drive along the dry riverbed of the Swakop Valley which is lined with tamarisk, prosopis and ana trees. We pass the oasis “Goanikontes”, enter the Namib Naukluft Park and view the “Moon Valley” from a vantage point. We close off this tour with a visit to the shifting sand dunes near Swakopmund.

Dinner is back at the hotel.

About Mokuti Etosha Lodge

On the eastern doorstep of world-famous Etosha National Park, in the mopane woodland of the region, Mokuti Etosha Lodge is a classic thatched safari lodge nestled among vast indigenous gardens, lending credence to the name “Mokuti” which in Ovambo means “in the forest”.

Mokuti Etosha Lodge is the perfect starting point for your adventure into Etosha - Namibia’s crowning glory and one of the most popular national parks in Africa.

Mokuti Etosha Lodge is only a four-minute drive from the park's eastern gate, the Von Lindequist Gate near the historic Namutoni Fort. Mokuti is located on its own 4,000 hectare private nature reserve, which shares a common border with Etosha.
