With its rich and ancient history dating back thousands of years and its picture-perfect white sand beaches, swaying palm trees and azure ocean filled with incredible marine life, the south-east African nation of Mozambique has been consistently voted as one of the best beach and diving destinations in the world.


Bordered by South Africa and Eswatini to the southwest, Zimbabwe to the west, Malawi and Zambia to the northwest and Tanzania to the north, Mozambique's extensive coastline stretches for 2,300km from Ponto D'Ouro in the south to Quiongo in the north and is lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.


For hundreds of years before the arrival of the first European settlers, Mozambique had been a thriving outpost for Arab, Persian and Indian traders with a number of Swahili-speaking port towns being developed between the 7th and 11th centuries. To this day, fortifications of these old trading towns can be seen in many of the country's tourism destinations.


In 1498 Portuguese seafarer Vasco da Gama landed in Mozambique and so began a process of gradual colonisation and settlement. Mozambique gained its independence from Portugal in 1975, but then descended into a protracted civil war that lasted until 1992, when democracy returned and a process of redevelopment began.


Tourism has become a major industry and investment into tourism infrastructure has been considerable, but without losing the country's wonderful, laid-back and at times rustic charm. World-class resorts draw tourists from all over the world to sample the amazing food, culture and outstanding beaches.


Major tourism centres include Ponto D'Ouro and Ponto Malongane, renowned for their dive sites, the capital city of Maputo with its grand colonial buildings and buzzing, vibrant culture, as well as Xai Xai, Inhambane and Vilanculos for their amazing beaches and beach resorts.

    • Wet Season - October to March

      What to expect


      Mozambique has a warm, tropical climate. The average temperature is around 28 deg C (82 deg F), and the weather along the coast is sunny and warm even in midwinter.


      There are two distinct seasons - a wet season from October to March and a dry season from April to September, which is when the weather is about as perfect as it gets, with clear sunny days and almost no rain


      Wet Season


      Travel conditions are sometimes harder at this time of the year with torrential rains, thanks to the Indian Ocean monsoon season and the tropical storms that accompany. Away from the main tar roads, road conditions can deteriorate dramatically, so if you are self-driving, a 4x4 is recommended.


      November – This month is unpredictable; it usually starts raining some afternoons. Temperatures are between 21 deg C/70 deg F in the morning and 29 deg C/84 deg F in the afternoon.


      December, January, February & March – These are the wettest months, characterised by torrential downpours in the afternoon. Temperatures are around 30 deg C/86 deg F and the humidity is high.



    • Dry Season - April to September

      Dry Season


      This is the "winter" season and is one of the best times to visit Mozambique.


      April – The rains are dwindling and temperatures are dropping as well. Evenings are becoming slightly chilly and the humidity is lower.


      May – This is the end of autumn. Temperatures are relatively cool, typically 18 deg C/64 deg F in the morning and 27 deg C/81 deg F in the afternoon. The nighttime temperatures start to drop. There is little rainfall.


      June, July & August – The average morning temperature is 16 deg C/61 deg F. Bring warm clothing for the cooler mornings. Afternoons will be pleasant, with temperatures around 25 deg C/77 deg F. The Indian Ocean is still lovely and warm.


      September  – It starts to get warmer as spring arrives. The first rains will bring relief in the interior and on the coast things are beginning to cook with humidity levels rising. Daytime temperatures will be around 28 deg C/82 deg F.

    Travel Advice

    Mozambique Visa Requirements

    Tourist visas for foreign nationals are available on arrival in Mozambique and are valid for 30 days.  Citizens of all countries can obtain a visa on arrival at all border posts if they have documentation to prove they are traveling for leisure purposes (return ticket, accommodation confirmation or invitation letter). 


    While it is not necessary to apply for visas in the country of origin for bona fide holiday trips to Mozambique, visitors can still do this if they wish.


    The tourism visa is valid for 30 days. Border visas allow dual entry within a 30-day period. 


    Please make sure your passport is valid for a minimum of  six  months from your proposed date of entry into Mozambique. Your passport must also contain a minimum of three blank pages. 


    These blank pages are to allow space for the visa as well as the stamps to the passport pages.


    When travelling with minors, if both parents travel with a child under 18 no additional documentation will be required for visas on arrival. When only one parent or a legal guardian, or another adult travels with a minor he or she may be required by an immigration officer to establish the adult’s relationship with the child. In this case, documentation and a letter of consent will be requested. 


    In cases where the documentation is requested and not at hand – the adult traveling with the minor will be given the opportunity to produce the documents after arrival.


    Mozambique is part of the SADC meaning that members of other SADC countries do not require a tourist visa if visiting.

    What To Pack

    Beach holidays in Mozambique are easy to pack for. Select a swimsuit or two and a range of loose, confortable and cool clothing, sandals, flip-flops, sunhats and sunscreen and you are A for away!


    For ladies and gents we recommend a sarong or two in a cool cotton. These are perfect for laying on as well as draping around you when walking to and from the beach. Loose overshirts or T-shirts are also perfect for going over the top of you swimsuits.


    Pack a beach bag too - something soft and spacious to put your beach stuff in - sunscreen, water/drinks, hats, a book or two, your smartphone/tablet etc.


    Also pack a rash vest or similar for snorkelling in to prevent sun-burn. If you have your own snorkelling gear, then feel free to bring it. 


    Away from the beach bring shorts, cut-off cargo pants, T-shirts and a skirt or two and a sundress, as well as more formal sandals/shoes (deck shoes or loafers for example) if you want to go to a restaurant at night.


    A pair of long pants and a long-sleeved shirt will also help with mosquitoes and other biting insects in the evening. Bring your own insect repellant too!


    Cool cottons and linen are always great for the evenings and days out on tours or activities. A hat is an absolute must. As are sunglasses.

    Money Matters

    The currency of Mozambique is the Metical, but the US dollar and the South African Rand are widely accepted. 


    Cash is king in Mozambique, but credit cards are accepted at most hotels and accommodation establishments. Visa cards are one of the best cards to have with you as many places in Mozambique do not accept Mastercard.


    All of the commercial banks offer foreign exchange services. There are also a number of privately owned foreign exchange companies in major towns and tourism centres.

    Health & Safety

    The most important thing to remember about Mozambique  in terms of health is that malaria is widespread throughout the country, which makes prophylaxis absolutely essential.


    Speak to your doctor about anti-malarials for you and your family and take additional precautions such as spraying with mosquito repellants and wearing long sleeves and trousers in the evenings. 


    Once you return home, monitor your health carefully and if you develop any flu-like symptoms within 21 days consult a doctor and inform the doctor you have been to a malaria area and may need a malaria test.


    In terms of personal safety, Mozambique is largely a safe country to visit and rest assured that we will only send  you to areas that are considered safe.


     As is the case in many countries, theft is quite common in the larger towns and cities but incidents are easily avoided by following basic safety precautions - don't carry large amounts of cash on you, lock your valuables in a safe and if you are self-driving, don't leave valuables in your car.


    Many tourists visit Mozambique every year and most visits are trouble free.


    Tropical cyclones may occur in coastal areas during the Wet season months from December to February. It is advised to monitor weather updates when travelling during these months.
